Activity Summary

Students create an animated number story using mixed numbers subtraction in Scratch. First they write and solve their own number story. Then, they use their story to create a Storyboard, paying particular attention to the order of the events, the timing of the events, how they can show the important parts of the story in picture format, and how they can connect the events through pictures, words, and actions. Partners then review each other’s storyboards and give feedback. Students make revisions (if needed) then use their Storyboard to create their animated story in Scratch.

Math Connections

Students solve a multi-step number story using subtraction of mixed numbers.

CS Connections

Students plan to create number story animations in Scratch, by thinking about the steps, sequence, timing, and repetition of the story they need to illustrate.
