Students get an introduction to the use of variables and decomposition and extend their understanding of fraction equivalence by solving problems involving equally shared pizzas
computer-based
This activity has three phases. First, students independently solve an equal sharing problem on paper. Second, the teacher leads a discussion eliciting different solution strategies for solving the problem from the students. For each solution, the teacher walks students through what a corresponding programming solution would look like. Third, the students code equal sharing solutions involving a loop.
Students extend their understanding of fraction equivalence by solving problems involving equally shared pizzas.
Students get an introduction to the use of variables and decomposition in problem solving. Students use their knowledge of repetition when decomposing a problem.
